Skin boosters in Korea: Rejuran, Profhilo, and Juvederm Hydrate

How skin boosters differ from fillers, the Rejuran Healer origin story, and a side-by-side on sessions, longevity, and price for the three main products.

Quick answer

Skin boosters improve hydration and skin quality without adding visible volume. Rejuran Healer (PDRN) originated in Korea and remains most popular there; one session costs ₩200,000–₩400,000. Profhilo (₩300,000–₩600,000) and Juvederm Hydrate (₩200,000–₩400,000) use HA; Rejuran uses salmon DNA-derived polynucleotides and works through a different biological mechanism.

Skin boosters are one of Korea’s most exported aesthetic concepts. Rejuran Healer, the category leader, was developed in Korea, first approved by KFDA in 2014, and only reached European markets years later. Korean dermatologists have therefore accumulated more clinical experience with these treatments than almost anywhere else — and Korean patients use them more routinely, as maintenance rather than a special occasion treatment.

What skin boosters do (and don’t do)

A skin booster is injected as multiple small papules across the cheeks, forehead, under-eyes, or décolletage — not as a deep volume deposit. The goal is improved skin quality: better hydration, more elasticity, reduced pore visibility, and finer skin texture.

They do not:

  • Add structural volume (that’s a filler)
  • Lift sagging tissue (that’s HIFU, Thermage, or surgery)
  • Remove pigmentation (that’s laser)

They work best for patients with dull, dehydrated, or textured skin who want improvement without any structural change.

Rejuran Healer is sold under the brand name Ameela in the UK and parts of Europe, where it received CE approval in 2022. The active ingredient is identical; Korean pricing is typically 40–60% lower than European clinic prices.

Rejuran Healer: why Korea uses it differently

Outside Korea, Rejuran is often marketed as a premium single-treatment event. In Korean dermatology clinics, it is routine maintenance — practitioners prescribe it on a 3–6 month cycle the way Western dermatologists might prescribe retinoids.

The clinical data supports this approach. PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is a salmon DNA extract that activates A2A adenosine receptors, triggering fibroblast proliferation and reducing inflammation. Multiple controlled studies from Korean institutions show improvements in:

  • Skin thickness (measured by ultrasound)
  • Transepidermal water loss (hydration marker)
  • Elasticity (Cutometer measurements)

The three-session initial course is clinically supported; a single session as a one-off treatment produces modest rather than significant improvement.

Profhilo: the European comparison

Profhilo contains the same active molecule as HA fillers (hyaluronic acid) but at unusually high concentration and in a form that diffuses through tissue rather than staying in place. It spreads from five injection points per side to create a broad remodelling effect. Korean clinics offer it, though it is less dominant than Rejuran because Rejuran’s PDRN mechanism is perceived as more biologically active.

For patients with moderate skin laxity who want improvement in overall skin quality and mild tightening across the cheeks and neck, Profhilo is a strong option.

Practical notes for international patients

All three products require multiple sessions for full effect. A realistic Korea trip protocol:

  • Short trip (5–7 days): One session of whichever product suits your concern; accept that you’re starting a course rather than completing one.
  • Longer trip (2+ weeks): Two sessions (Rejuran or Juvederm Hydrate on day 1 and day 14; Profhilo on day 1 and day 28 if possible).
  • Maintenance: Confirm with the clinic whether the same product is available in your home country, or whether you can continue the course in Seoul on a future trip.

The treatment itself takes 20–40 minutes. A topical anaesthetic cream is applied 20–30 minutes before injection. There is mild swelling and small papules at injection sites for 24–48 hours.

How is a skin booster different from a regular filler?

Standard fillers add structural volume — they lift, project, or fill a hollow. Skin boosters are low-viscosity products injected in small papules across the skin surface to improve hydration, texture, and elasticity. They do not remodel facial structure. Think of fillers as architecture and skin boosters as skin quality treatment.

How many Rejuran sessions do you need?

The standard Rejuran protocol is 3 sessions at 3–4 week intervals, followed by maintenance every 3–6 months. Visible improvement in skin texture, pore size, and fine lines typically appears after the second session. Some patients see meaningful improvement after a single session if skin is significantly dehydrated.

Can you combine skin boosters with other treatments during a Korea trip?

Yes, with timing caveats. Skin boosters are often combined with pico laser (laser first, booster at least 2 weeks later) or botox (same day is fine). Avoid combining with CO2 laser, chemical peels, or Morpheus8 on the same visit — these create open channels that could increase infection risk. Discuss your planned treatment sequence with the clinic in advance.
